This week we will be creating origami models of scout uniforms around the world.

You will need

• Scissors
• Coloured pens or pencils
• A4 paper

Before you begin

• This is a great activity to run during an online session. Check out the advice on using Zoom and other popular digital platforms and the guidance on being safe online.
• For younger sections, email everyone’s parents and carers and explain that they may need to help their young person with this activity. Send them a copy of the ‘Illustrated instructions’ or a link to this activity and ask them to print a copy or have the webpage open.
• Make sure everyone has a square piece of paper before you get stuck in. They’ll also need a pair of scissors, and some coloured pens or pencils. You’ll need paper and scissors too so you can show everyone what to do.

Run the activity

1. The person leading the game should welcome everyone to the meeting and ask them to mute themselves.
2. Everyone should make a square from their piece of paper – it should be at least 15cm on each side so it‘s not too tricky to fold. 
3. The person leading the activity should show everyone how to fold their piece of paper to make the uniform. They should remind everyone that they can look at their sheet or webpage to help them. 

Try to hold your paper so it’s on camera as you make each fold. Give everyone time to copy and catch up before you move on to the next step. 

3. Everyone should decorate their shirts. They could copy a uniform from a different country or section or use their imagination to design their own. 

Remind everyone that they can draw on details like badges and scarves if they want to.

4. Everyone should take it in turns to hold their shirt up to the camera so everyone can see what they created. 

How to fold

1. Fold the paper in half horizontally and then vertically, then unfold it. There should be a slight cross-shaped crease in the paper.
2. Fold the bottom of the paper up to within one centimetre from the top. Then turn the paper over.
3. Fold the sides of the paper into the middle so they overlap slightly. 
4. Fold the top flaps back on each side to make two right-angled triangles (or lapel shapes). The narrowest points should be at the bottom, in the middle of your creation. 
5. Fold the strip of unfolded paper at the top down and tuck it behind the right-angled triangles. Then turn your creation over. The right-angled triangles should stick out so they look like sleeves.
6. With scissors, carefully cut down the crease that runs from the centre top to bottom. The cut doesn’t need to be long – just enough to make a hole that looks like the neckline.
7. Fold the paper either side of the cut down to make a shape that looks like a collar.

You will need

• 2 tbsp Icing sugar
• 1 tbsp Butter
• 1 tsp Cream cheese
• 1 Dash vanilla extract
• 2 tsp Cocoa powder
• Sandwich bag (zip lock closure best for this recipe)
• Additional treats (marshmallows, m&m’s, peanut butter, nuts raisins)

Instructions

1. Pile all your ingredients into the bag
2. If you want to add in your additional treats, you can do it now – just throw a handful in
3. Squeeze all the air out of the bag and seal it
4. Stick the bag under your armpit
5. Squish it, smoosh it, moosh it until all it’s all mixed and the ingredients have a creamy consistency
6. Stick your fudge into the fridge for half an hour [we found it may need more!]
7. Grab a spoon and dig in

This activity is to make a paper aeroplane with a difference. This activity we have borrowed from the scouts winter camp 2021 activities. wintercamp.org.uk

You will need

• Hoops printable link below. (or draw your own on A4 paper following the instructions in the video)
• 4 Paper straws
• A4 piece of paper
• Scissors
• Sellotape

Instructions

1. From the printable cut out one long and one short piece
2. Next, flatten both ends of all 4 straws
3. Take the long strip of paper and line up one end of the straws with the greyed-out rectangles and tape in place
4. Make the arrows on the long strip meet and tape at this point
5. With the short strip connect and tape the arrows
6. Connect the unattached end of the straws to this small hoop with the tape
7. It is now ready to fly! Did it fly well? Watch the video to find out how and why this type of paper plane works!

This week (11th Feb 2021) we will be making peppermint Creams with the cubs. The details for whats required are below.

Ingredients:

• 200g Icing sugar, sieved, plus extra for dusting.
• half tbsp condensed milk
• 1 tsp peppermin flavouring, to taste
• Food colouring of choice

Method:

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the icing sugar, condensed milk, peppermint flavouring, food colouring of choice and 2 tbsp water to form a stiff paste. If the mixture feels too dry, add a splash more water, likewise, add more icing sugar if it feels too runny.
2. Dust a work surface and rolling pin with icing sugar and roll the paste out to about half a centimetre (0.5cm) thick. Dip a 4cm (1 1⁄2cm)-diameter cutter in icing sugar and stamp out 24 rounds. Allow the rounds to dry out a little before decorating. If you haven’t got a pastry cutter, roll the mix into a sausage and cut into 1cm slices.
